Solutions to Protect and Restore the Skin Barrier

Protect and FortifyMany consumers are making their skincare a main priority. They have taken the time to learn about specific ingredients and the needs for their skin to create a healthy skincare routine. Through this research, consumers have learned the importance of protecting the skin barrier.

What is your skin barrier?
The stratum corneum – also known as the skin barrier – the outermost layer of the skin. It consists of tough skin cells called corneocytes and is bound together by lipids. These skin cells are made up of keratins and natural moisturizers and the lipid layer contains cholesterol, fatty acids and ceramides. The skin barrier must contain good health so it can protect the skin from harmful environmental toxins and pathogens that could enter the skin and cause harm to your body.

What can harm your skin barrier?
Each day, the skin faces many threats that come from outside the body and a few from within. These threats include various conditions such as dry or humid climates, allergens, irritants, pollutants, sun exposure, over exfoliation, stress, and genetic skin conditions. Natural threats are not the only harm that can be caused to the skin barrier. It can also be affected by what someone is doing personally like an over complicated skincare routine or overusing acid toners. This can compromise the moisture barrier and create dryness. Esthetician Renée Rouleau explains that a damaged skin barrier “creates small, invisible cracks in the skin. Through these cracks, moisture that should be sealed inside escapes and irritants enter more easily, making skin tight, dry, and more sensitive.” If the skin barrier faces any threats or is already damaged, consumers need products that are specifically designed to restore the skin barrier.
